Jerusalem (EFE).- The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, affirmed today that “the internal debate”, provoked by the controversial judicial reform, is not going to prevent Israel from acting against its enemies, at the beginning of the cabinet meeting of security after the launch of about thirty rockets from Lebanon.
“The internal debate in Israel will not prevent us from acting against our enemies. Our enemies will pay a price for any aggression,” the prime minister said about that attack, which the Army attributed to Palestinian militias operating in southern Lebanon.
These militias, led by Hamas, have also launched rockets from Gaza for two consecutive days, in response to police arrests and charges inside the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, in the middle of Ramadan.
“You will find that when we are put to the test, the citizens of Israel stand together and support their armed forces,” Netanyahu added in his first public statement today.
The security cabinet is expected to decide to launch an offensive both on Gaza, and also on Palestinian targets in southern Lebanon, according to Hebrew media.
34 rockets from Lebanon
The launch of at least 34 rockets from Lebanon was the biggest attack on the border since the 2006 war waged by Israeli troops with the Shiite Islamist group, Hezbollah, which is not responsible for what happened today, although Israel believes it was so much.
“The State of Israel will act at all levels to preserve its security and that of its citizens,” anticipated Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who demanded a condemnation from the international community.
For its part, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (YIP) celebrated the attack from Lebanon and described it as “a strong and heroic response by the resistance against the crimes and attacks of the enemy (Israel)”, in reference to yesterday’s clashes between Israeli policemen and Palestinian faithful in the Esplanade of the Mosques of Jerusalem.
These clashes, which resulted in more than 30 wounded Palestinians and some 350 detainees, were followed by the firing of the first rockets from Gaza yesterday, to which Israel responded with bombardments on Hamas targets.
