The “freestylers” Mnak, the presenter Queen Mary and the producer and DJ Verse have held a meeting with journalists this Wednesday a few hours before participating in the IX Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE), which is held in Cádiz, through a workshop and an impromptu rap exhibition, organized by FundéuRAE in collaboration with Red Bull Batalla.
The three artists will be accompanied by Blon and NikiDMT, another of the two figures of “freestyle” (in the world of “hip hop”, “freestyle” is the ability to rap improvised), in this workshop that will deal with everything what is behind this artistic movement in Spanish, the importance of the word and the use of language when it comes to achieving the best improvisations, and many details and tricks that are handled in competitions.
Their main tool is language, they say, making the most of “the dictionary” and narratives, but they explain that they have not invented anything because it all started with the trova, and they believe that the first battle of “freestylers” was the one between Quevedo and Góngora, especially because of the way he insulted the former, has explained Queen Mary -Mary Ruiz- (Madrid, 1980), “host” (person who directs and presents the battles) of these shows.
Some language artists who declare themselves “protildistas” and who, if they could propose a word to be included in the dictionary of the Spanish language, it would be “friestail”.
Colloquial expressions of each country
The producer DJ Verse -Guillermo Camacho Rodríguez- (Madrid, 1987) assures that this discipline makes a more transversal language, to which new words are added, expanding the vocabulary.
The “freestyler” Mnak -Ignacio Romero Montero- (Socuéllamos, Ciudad Real, 1997), who has a degree in Comparative Literature, explains that the most direct relationship when improvising is the use of literary figures to develop the fiction they create within of the battle, so they are usually up to date.
The language they use is diverse, since the battles take place not only in Spain, but also in Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina… They soak up a lot of the colloquial expressions of each Latin American country in which they battle to avoid misunderstandings, as can happen with the polysemy of the word “take”, says Mnak, who assures that he does not rehearse but “trains”.
Mnak, who is now releasing his first book, “My black cloud”, a compilation of poems, phrases and verses, assures that his comes from an ancient art that has evolved and that he uses “pure words”.
Words included in the “Writing Guide”, which the Fundación del Español Urgente (FundéuRAE) and Red Bull Batalla have developed within a collaboration agreement signed between both entities, aimed at Spanish-speaking journalists who cover this discipline.

Mnak says that they are already “the first elite generation” in their discipline, which is being written daily with what they do: “We are creators of language as a form of expression.”
They are far from insults and believe that they must have the battle of the “social cliché” that places them out of high places, because they have “a lot of culture in general and a great command of language”, in the opinion of DJ Verse.
In terms of gender equality in the battles, Queen Mary acknowledges that there has been progress, but warns that the ceiling is not yet broken because there is still a lot to do, since the public is merciless with women, especially on social networks. EFE
