Cádiz (EFE).- Although the term “vestíbulo” exists in Spanish, if the foreign term “hall” were adapted to this language, would it be correct to write “jol”? The RAE’s response is that, indeed, it is correct, as are the words “jáquer” and “wiski”.
This is one of the doubts of Spanish speakers that the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts (PDP) will resolve, the second edition of which has been presented in Cádiz by its director, the academic Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez, as part of the activities of the IX Language Congress, which is being held in Cadiz.
The PDP explains that the Spanish equivalents of the English word “hall” can be used, depending on the case, “vestíbulo”, “entrada” or “recibidor”. The adaptation to Anglicism is unnecessary, but if the spelling “jol” is done, it would be possible and correct.
In fact, there is already documentation of this in Spanish: “You wait for me in the jol of the hotel or outside the door, ready to get in the car, because you can’t stop there for more than a couple of minutes” (G. Salvador, ” compass axis”).
The same happens with “wiski”, a word that was seen as a foreign term years ago, since the W and the K were “condemned” and were not part of the alphabet, so the accepted form was “whiskey”, until the two letters began to be included, from which time the spelling “wiski” has the DNA of Spanish, the academic has indicated.
“Jol” is correct, “balé” for now not
The use of the word “balé” instead of “ballet” has been left “for later”, pointed out the academic, who explained that they decided that allowing its use would be risky.
The director of the DPD recalled how the first edition of this dictionary, in November 2005, was a revolution within the RAE, since it is aimed at resolving the doubts of many millions of Spanish-speakers.
Paz Battaner, director of the Dictionary of the Spanish language, has explained for her part that the 24th edition will come out in 2026.
A dictionary that receives millions of queries; in such a way that, for example, in April 2022, 50 million geolocated queries were selected from more than 200 countries.
The will of the Royal Academy, has indicated its director, Santiago Muñoz Machado, is that there be, in addition to the online version, a limited edition on paper of the 24 Dictionary of Language “to preserve tradition.”
The entry “Jol” and “wiski”, correct ways to avoid foreign words, was first published in EFE Noticias.
