Berlin (EFE) not be dictated to the authorities in Kiev.
“Do not hand over any weapons to the aggressor Russia,” Scholz said in a formal statement before the Bundestag (lower house of the German Parliament) in relation to China, calling on it to use its influence on Moscow to pressure the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
Scholz insisted in his speech that a peace agreement will not be possible if it “passes over the heads of Ukrainian men and women.”
The foreign minister warned that “if Ukraine stopped defending itself, there would be no peace, but rather the end of Ukraine.” And he added: “A peace dictated against the will of the victims does not arise only for moral reasons. But also because we consider the well-being of our country and the security of Europe and the world”.
Scholz was opposed to a disturbance of the world peace order and insisted that a lasting peace in Ukraine “requires reparation of international law, respect for our peace system.” He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin has broken those rules and violates the United Nations Charter.
Regarding China, Scholz welcomed the fact that its rulers have shown themselves against the use of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, and called on Beijing to share its “ideas” on peace in Ukraine “with the main parties affected, with the Ukrainians and with President (Volodimir) Zelensky”.
And he was upset that China had not expressed at the recent meeting of G20 finance ministers a “clear condemnation of the Russian attack.”
Scholz travels to Washington to discuss the situation in Ukraine with Biden
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced Thursday in the federal Parliament that he will travel to Washington today to discuss the situation in Ukraine with US President Joe Biden.
Scholz told the Bundestag that he agrees with Biden that NATO “is not a party” to the war in that country and explained that his trip to Washington is intended to “continue our close harmony” in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“One year after the turn of the era, that also means: a year of transatlantic partnership, closer and more trust-filled than ever before,” added Scholz.
The German chancellor gave a speech before Parliament on the occasion of the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in which he called for a peace agreement for that country that takes into account respect for the rights of the Ukrainian people.
Scholz outlined his country’s commitments regarding the delivery of arms to Ukraine and the training of Ukrainian soldiers on German soil, adding that the German Army will put 30,000 soldiers at the disposal of the future NATO security structure.
