Ciudad Juárez (EFE) their daughters, before the wave of femicides that afflicts the city.
The attendees, who wore outfits in purple, black, and pink, had the same slogan on their clothing.
In addition, they carried cardboard with the message “We demand appointment of state heads of FEM Zona Norte and of the Search Commission.”
“Not one more, not one more, not one more murdered.” “Sir, ma’am, don’t be indifferent, she kills women in the face of the people,” the protesters intoned.
At this point, in 2001, the bodies of several women were located. From this international news, the city is remembered for the homicides committed against women.
Measures against the wave of femicides
Due to the fact that violent acts continued to occur, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) suggested to the Government of the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua the creation of a memorial to remember the women victims of violence found in that place.
As well as the creation of a Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Women that would deal with acts of violence committed against them.
“We want to dignify these spaces for the cause. It is important to remember that violence against women is a real problem. According to data from the Inegi (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), in Ciudad Juárez we are the city with the highest child and adolescent sexual violence against women. The government lacks actions to prevent it,” Yadira Cortés, a member of the Red Mesa de Mujeres collective, told EFE.
It details that there is a lack of interest on the part of the authorities to solve this problem, since, as in the case of the inmates who fled on January 1 of this year, most of them are already back in prison.
They have issued actions so that it does not happen again, but in this other problem the same actions do not exist, denounce these groups.
In addition, Cortés mentions that, despite the fact that Chihuahua has a governor, María Eugenia Campos, she has lowered the budget for investigations of femicides, which could prevent this type of violence.
they demand justice
For her part, Norma Laguna, mother of Idaly Juache, a young woman who disappeared on February 23, 2010, told EFE that: “in my daughter’s case there are five people sentenced, there is another person who went free. A judge decided that she did not have to see, despite the fact that there was evidence of what she did ”.
“We ask the authorities to pay attention. Every time we get up we see more disappeared women, ”she adds, while maintaining that the authorities have no interest in this ending.
“My daughter is María Guadalupe Pérez Montes. She disappeared on January 31, 2009, she was located in Navajo Creek, north of the city. My daughter went downtown and didn’t come back. She did what was humane to find her alive and it was not like that, ”another of the activists tells EFE.
This mother says that her daughter’s case is still open and that she is demanding justice. In addition, she emphasizes that it is important that the missing girls are found alive.
She comments that women can no longer take to the streets and adds that these types of actions, more than anything, seek prevention so that femicide and cases of disappearance do not happen again.
According to data from the aforementioned Red Mesa de Mujeres, there are between 500 and 600 investigation folders in the city for cases of family violence on a monthly basis.
During 2021, 171 intentional homicides against women were registered, while during 2022 there were 133, 22.2% less, although the latter occurred with extreme violence.
