Attendees were able to immerse themselves in a recreation of one of the most popular paintings in the history of Spanish art and interact with full-scale, three-dimensional reproductions of the protagonists of the work, along with whom they could be photographed “wearing” costumes Philip IV’s court made of foam board.
The installation, organized by Turespaña and the Prado Museum, was held in the Terraza Cervantes, a cultural space at the entrance to the Miguel de Cervantes Library in Shanghai, located on Anfu street, one of the most popular among the youth of the city.
The painting, from 1656, captivates with its game of planes and perspectives and also serves as a context to publicize the city of Madrid as a tourist destination, as well as Madrid de los Austrias and the Prado Museum as cultural references.
The event was held as part of a tour by the CEO of Turespaña, Miguel Sanz, through China, a country from which more than 700,000 tourists visited Spain in 2019 -the year before the pandemic- and which recently put an end to most of restrictions imposed within the framework of its ‘zero covid’ policy.
“We have told our guests that this painting hides many secrets, like Spain as a tourist destination,” Sanz said in statements to EFE.
“Our objective is to recover the Chinese visitor as soon as possible, to do it intensely and to return to those double-digit growth rates of more than 20% that we had before the pandemic,” added the Spanish emissary.
This Saturday the exhibition ‘Hidden Spaces: from Kaifeng to Madrid’, from the José Manuel Ballester National Photography Award, was also presented, an audiovisual work that runs through the Prado Museum and also pays homage to classical Chinese art with an interpretation of ‘Qingming Shanghe Tu’, 11th century masterpiece.
The aforementioned cultural events take place a few days before the fiftieth anniversary of official diplomatic relations between Madrid and Beijing, which also coincides with the Spain-China Dual Year of Tourism Culture.
The celebrations for this 2023 also include the commemoration of 50 years since the death of the Malaga painter Pablo Picasso, another milestone that seeks to reinforce the Spain tourism brand with values and attributes related to culture, art and heritage, highly appreciated by tourists.
