San Sebastián, Feb 16 (EFE).- Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea will play his 100th match against Celta on Saturday with the txuri urdin shirt, despite not yet being 21 years old.
However, that figure could be even higher if he had not been virtually unemployed for a year due to a serious muscle injury that little by little seems to be leaving behind.
The San Sebastian footballer smiles again and now that he is going to be a centenary, much more. “Reaching this figure is very nice and I am very happy about it,” he assured in an interview with the club’s media.
He made his debut on December 21, 2018 by the hand of Asier Garitano in a match against Alavés in which Real Sociedad lost 0-1, which would end up costing the Bergara coach the dismissal. However, those minutes that he played against the Gasteiz team made him the first player of the 21st century to make his debut in the League.
“Being so young you are not aware of what you are doing until people remind you when you are years old. Then you realize that you were a child”, comments Barrenetxea, who was six days away from turning 17.
Of his career he keeps two special moments. “There are many games and many moments that I have enjoyed”, he points out. “If I had to say one, it would be the Copa del Rey final and the first goal I scored at Anoeta against Real Madrid. That was amazing,” he recalls.
Despite the fact that injuries have slowed him down, Barrenetxea is enjoying the moment because he has to live “a very good time”. He believes that Real is “in a very positive dynamic” after entering “three consecutive years in Europe” and advocates “continuing like this because it is the way for the club to continue growing.”
He also considers that “the team is showing its worth” and ensures that the key to success is that “we train every day as if it were a game and then that is reflected on the pitch”.
For a man from San Sebastian like him, wearing the Real shirt is “tremendous pride” because it is where he always wanted to play. “Where I dreamed of scoring and celebrating my goals. It is a great satisfaction and hopefully it will continue to grow in this club ”, he wishes.
On Saturday against Celta, he hopes to celebrate his centenary by adding three more points: “Hopefully, it would be a dream. To do 100 games with a home win would be a finishing touch”.
