In statements sent to the media, Enrique López (Cacabelos, León, 59 years old) has confirmed his withdrawal as a militant that “does not mean giving up the principles and values that the party’s ideology represents”, and has assured that he will continue working “with greater hard work and dedication” in the Government of the Community of Madrid, as long as it has “the trust” of Díaz Ayuso.
According to the newspaper ABC, López has communicated his resignation to the general secretary of the party, Cuca Gamarra, a decision that had already been transferred to the Madrid president, sources from the regional government have indicated, who have specified that there will be no change in the regional executive.
López was Secretary of Justice during the period of Pablo Casado in the national leadership of the PP, and also one of the strong members of the Government of Díaz Ayuso, but he was singled out after the internal war with the former popular leader for the contract related to the brother of the president.
The Madrid Minister of the Presidency and Justice avoided positioning himself during the crisis that opened up the PP and a month after the internal crisis that opened up the party, he lost weight within the regional government with the appointment of Enrique Ossorio as vice president, a position that had not been created in this legislature after the break in the coalition with Ciudadanos.
Enrique López and his relationship with Ayuso
Before the arrival of Alberto Núñez Feijóo in Genoa to replace Casado, López made his position as Secretary of Justice and Interior of the PP available to the party, which he assumed in January 2020 to replace Rafael Catalá.
With this formalization of his withdrawal from the party and after the tense relationship with the Madrid president after the internal war in the PP, it remains to be determined if he will continue as a counselor in the event that Ayuso wins at the polls, or if he will return to the judiciary .
Magistrate of the National Court, López was in the summer of 2019 the star signing of Díaz Ayuso in his first government team, where he held the portfolio of Justice, Interior and Victims, and has continued in the Executive of Díaz Ayuso after the early elections of 2021.
Their positions in the General Council of the Judiciary and in the Constitutional Court (TC) were proposed by the PP.
López had to resign from the TC in 2014, a year after his appointment, for driving his motorcycle drunk and without a helmet, which led to a conviction for a crime against road safety. He was also removed from the Gürtel and Bárcenas trials due to his affinity for the PP.
