Los Angeles (USA) (EFE).- The 65th edition of the Grammy Awards, which will take place next Sunday, will celebrate half a century of hiphop history, with a show that will feature celebrities such as Queen Latifah, LL Cool J and Missy Elliott.
The show is “just the beginning” of a year full of festivities that the Recording Academy will undertake around the musical genre, according to advance Harvey Mason Jr., the director of the organization, through a press release.
“For five decades, hiphop has not only been a defining force in music, but a huge influence on our culture,” said Mason Jr.
In addition to the aforementioned artists, the historical segment will also feature musicians who pioneered the genre such as Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Mele Mel and Scorpio/Ethiopian King in the 1970s.
Going through Busta Rhymes and Salt-N-Pepa of the eighties, Spliff Star, Ice-T, De La Soul, Big Boi (Outkast) and The Lox in the nineties, while Nelly, Future and GloRilla represent the new millennium.
Other artists taking part in the musical tribute include Lil Wayne, Method Man, Scarface, Swizz Beatz, Too $hort and Lil Baby and producers DJ Drama and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Before issuing this announcement, the Academy had already announced that the event will feature live performances by Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, Kim Petras, Sam Smith, Harry Styles and Bad Bunny.
Favorites at the Grammys 2023
The main favorite of this edition is Beyoncé, who will seek to further expand her musical legacy with the record work “Renaissance”, which earned her nine nominations and could elevate her as the performer with the most gramophones in history.
They are followed by singer Kendrick Lamar, with eight, and Adele and Brandi Carlile, with seven each.
The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, known for being the home of the Lakers and Clippers basketball teams and will have among its presenters the first lady of the United States, Jill Biden, as well as like singer Cardi B and actress Viola Davis.
Other personalities that will be part of the gala are comedian James Corden, actor Dwayne Johnson “The Rock” and multiple Grammy winners Olivia Rodrigo and Shania Twain, who will take the stage to announce the winners of some categories.
