Barracas (Castellón) (EFE).- The President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, assured this Monday during his visit to the command post of the fire that is still active in the interior of Castellón that he guarantees “all the commitment of the Government when the calls to tackle the task of recovery.”
“The most important thing is that we do not have to lament the loss of human life. With the fire still alive, we have to ask for caution,” said Sánchez, who also highlighted solidarity for the reception of the nearly 1,700 evacuees due to the fire since last Thursday, both from the towns of Castellón and Teruel.
On the other hand, it has offered “all solidarity and recognition” to the fourteen firefighters who have been slightly injured in the extinction work, and who are already recovered. “We must highlight not only his professionalism, but his determination and commitment to contain this fire.”
Sánchez, accompanied by the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has met with both the professionals who direct the operation against the flames and the mayors of the affected areas.
“There is no room for denial”
“Unfortunately, what was not is beginning to be common. We are in March, coming out of winter and this has a lot to do with the climate emergency”, pointed out the president, who insisted that this emergency “is not future, but current and urgent, and there is no room for denialism in the face of this problem, nor be neutral before those who are”.
After highlighting the work of the State Security Forces and Corps, the firefighters -both from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and from the six autonomous communities deployed in the area-, personnel from the UME, the Red Cross and volunteers, Sánchez referred to the fourteen injured firefighters to convey their “solidarity and appreciation”.
Likewise, he explained that he had “guaranteed” the “commitment of the Government” in a previous interview with the mayors of the affected areas, so that “once the last flames are extinguished, we can begin the complex and urgent task of recovery ”.
“Cattle, tourist areas, businesses…, the Government delegations will provide the necessary resources so that in the shortest possible time we can provide answers, stability, guarantees and certainties”, he added.
Referring to the single command that coordinates the work of extinction, Sánchez has highlighted the “very positive coordination”, which in his opinion is “the product of the reflection shared between the Government and the regional presidents after the meeting held in La Palma last year ”.
“We agree on the need to strengthen cooperation in the face of phenomena such as fires, which do not cover geographical borders,” he added.
Puig hopes that the displaced can return in the next few hours
For his part, Ximo Puig thanked Sánchez for his presence in Castellón “recently landed from the Dominican Republic” to “give encouragement to those who work to extinguish a fire generated in the worst possible scenario”.
“We are living through very complex moments, but the coordination is being effective. The important thing is that there have been no human losses. The Mediterranean forest will recover, the priority is people. We have always acted with security in mind”, stressed the President of the Generalitat.
“There are two active outbreaks left, one more than the other, and we hope that we can give good news after 6:00 p.m. and that in the next few hours the displaced people can begin to return,” he concluded.
