Brussels, Mar 23 (EFE).- The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Belgian Prime Minister, Alexander de Croo, discussed on Thursday the pending issues before the EU before next year the elections to the European Parliament.
Sánchez’s meeting with De Croo has been framed in the tour that the head of the Spanish Executive intends to carry out through fifteen countries before assuming the semi-annual presidency of the EU on July 1.
The objective is to know the positions of the European partners on issues that will be very present in that presidency and in which it is hoped to reach an agreement or give them a significant boost.
After the meeting, the Prime Minister reported that the reform of the electricity market, EU trade agreements, migration and coordination with the next six-month European presidencies have been the main issues discussed with De Croo.
Coordination with Belgium
This coordination is especially relevant with Belgium since it will be the country that assumes the community presidency just after Spain, and in the middle of its mandate the elections to the European Parliament will be held.
Sánchez had planned that this visit to Belgium would be part of a trip that would also take him to the Netherlands and Luxembourg, but for scheduling reasons it was finally limited to Brussels and hours before the start of the European Council meeting.
A summit in which some of the issues addressed in the meeting between the two heads of government will also be present.
Belgium is the seventh country that Sánchez visits on his tour prior to presiding over the EU after having already traveled to Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Ireland, Denmark and Finland, and he plans to travel to Italy, Cyprus and Malta on Tuesday and Wednesday of Easter .
