This has been revealed by the Deputy Minister for the Environment of the Ministry of Sustainable Development of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, Fernando Marchán, in statements to the media.
Marchán explained that the Iberian lynx population in Castilla-La Mancha has 359 individuals older than one year, so added to the cubs, the figures would be above 582 individuals.
In 2022, 84 wild litters have been detected
During the year 2022, the monitoring carried out with the collaboration of the farm staff, has allowed the detection of a total of 84 wild litters with at least 223 pups: 65 in the Eastern Sierra Morena and 47 in the western Sierra Morena (a total of 112); 107 in Montes de Toledo and 4 in the province of Albacete.
Currently, a total of 112 territorial females are settled in the region, 53 in Montes de Toledo, 37 in Sierra Morena Oriental, 21 controlled in Sierra Morena Occidental and 1 in the province of Albacete.
The Deputy Minister for the Environment announced this during the release of a specimen of Iberian lynx in the Dehesa Boyal Public Utility Forest in Torre de Juan Abad (Ciudad Real), in the reintroduction area of the species in eastern Sierra Morena .
Marchán explained that this will be the last to be reintroduced this year 2023 in the region within the European program ‘Life Lynx Connect’.
Tivek, an Iberian lynx born in La Olivilla (Jaén)
It is a male Iberian lynx born in 2022, which is approximately one year old, named Tivek and comes from the La Olivilla Captive Breeding Center (Jaén), dependent on the Junta de Andalucía.
With this lynx, the 119 specimens released in the region since 2014 are reached.
“With this, we more than meet the objectives set by the different Life projects that have been taking place for the recovery of this species in our territory and which has meant the recovery of a species that was in danger of extinction,” Marchán highlighted.
