Maritime Rescue had published on its Twitter account that the crew of the search plane that had found the canoe this afternoon estimated that it could take about 200 people on board, but the final count made when the rescue ship arrived in the area ruled out that it is the same boat that they were looking for.
Specifically, 80 men and six women of sub-Saharan origin were traveling on this one, in apparent good health, a spokeswoman for the public company has informed EFE.
The Guardamar Calípe has transferred them to the port of Arguineguín (Gran Canaria), where they have arrived at around 8:00 p.m.
In recent weeks, several large canoes have arrived in El Hierro, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, with up to 159 occupants, and numerous departures from Senegal have been reported, sometimes in groups, with four, five or more boats setting sail to the Same time.
Some have been intercepted in Mauritania and south of the Sahara and others are still in search, as is the case of the cayuco with some 200 people that left for Spain on June 27 from Kanfountine, some 1,700 kilometers from Tenerife. EFE
