Valencia (EFE) (Algeria), where he wanted to travel because his mother had died.
The event occurred around 11:15 a.m. at the port facilities when the woman, who lives in Bilbao and had a residence permit in Spain to work, tried to buy a ticket for the ferry, according to EFE sources from the Port Authority of Valencia.
After informing her that the ticket was full and that she had to wait half a month to board, the woman sprayed herself with about a liter of gasoline that she had in a bottle and, using a lighter, threatened to set herself on fire.
At this moment, a Baleària security guard and two port policemen pounced on her, took her lighter and prevented it from igniting, in a “very fast” and “high tension” action, according to the sources.
The woman, whose chest was irritated by gasoline, has been transferred to Hospital La Fe along with her 7-year-old son, who has not suffered any damage.
The president of the Port Authority of Valencia, Joan Calabuig, has congratulated the port police officers for their “agility and courage” in avoiding the tragedy.
