Madrid (EFE).- Overnight stays in hotel establishments increased by 8.8% in May compared to the same month last year, up to 32.4 million and above those registered in May 2019, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The prices of Spanish hotels rose 9.4% in May in relation to the same month of 2022, thus linking five months with increases in the interannual rate of more than 9%.
From January to May, overnight stays (113.50 million) have increased by 17.2% compared to the same period in 2022 and have exceeded hotel stays in the first five months of 2019 (112.33 million).
In May, the stays of residents in Spain amounted to 9.7 million, 30.1% of the total, while those of non-residents stood at over 22.6 million.
Increase in the number of nights
The average stay in hotels increased by 1.4% in the interannual rate, up to 3 nights, while the average billing reached 102.9 euros per occupied room, 8.2% more than in the same month of 2022.
By destinations preferred by Spaniards, hotels in Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community registered the highest number of guests in this last month of spring with 20.4%, 14.8% and 12.4% of the total, respectively.
Foreigners chose the Balearic Islands (30% of the total overnight stays) as the region to stay in hotels, followed by the Canary Islands (19.5%) and Catalonia (18.7% of the total).
Travelers from the United Kingdom and Germany concentrated 28.1% and 18.6%, respectively, of the total overnight stays of non-residents in hotel establishments in May.
British travelers have led the market for hotel stays since January 2022.
