Seoul (EFE).- The South Korean army deployed several combat aircraft today after detecting the presence in its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) of eight military aircraft from China and Russia.
As reported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), four Chinese military aircraft and four Russian military aircraft sequentially entered the South Korean ADIZ between 11:52 and 1:49 p.m. local time on Tuesday (2:52 and 4:49 GMT) and left the area without reaching invade the airspace of the peninsular country.
“The ROK (official South Korean name) military identified Chinese and Russian military aircraft even before they entered ADIZ and implemented tactical measures to prepare for contingencies by deploying Air Force fighter jets. ”, he added without elaborating.
China reports a joint mission
The South Korean military’s announcement came hours after China’s Defense Ministry reported that Russian and Chinese military aircraft had carried out a joint patrol mission over the seas of Japan (where the South Korean ADIZ is located) and eastern china.
This patrol, the sixth such operation to be carried out, is part of an annual cooperation agreement between Moscow and Beijing.
Similar situations have occurred before, most recently at the end of last December.
An ADIZ is an arbitrary line established to identify and respond early to military aircraft approaching a country’s airspace.
It is standard international practice for military aircraft entering another nation’s air defense identification zone to submit a flight plan to the country in advance and notify the location upon entry, something that did not happen today.
