Pamplona (EFE).- Osasuna will launch the 2023 Sanfermines chupinazo after a season in which the club has managed to qualify to play in Europe.
The mayor of Pamplona, Enrique Maya, has communicated the decision this morning to the spokesmen and women of the municipal groups. An announcement that comes 12 days before the new plenary session of the Pamplona City Council is set up, in which the current mayor will not be.
In this way, a historic season is rewarded with the classification of the rojillo team for the Conference League and with the dispute of the final of the Copa del Rey and which also recognizes the centenary of the club in 2020.
This recognition closes a historic season for Club Atlético Osasuna. Their seventh place in the Santander League, certified this Sunday with their victory against Girona, qualifies the team to play the next European competition campaign.
The Conference League awaits the rojillos on their return to Europe 16 years later. Something else, specifically 18 years old, had to wait for the red fans to experience another final of the Copa del Rey. It was on May 6 at La Cartuja in Seville against Real Madrid. Osasuna lost 2-1, but mobilized more than 23,000 people who traveled to Andalusia, in addition to all those who lived the event throughout Navarra with enthusiasm.
Thus, for the first time in its history, next season CA Osasuna will play four competitions, the Santander League, the Copa del Rey, the Conference League and the Spanish Super Cup.
The sporting successes of this campaign are also joined by the memory of the club’s centenary in 2020, a year marked by the covid-19 pandemic, which left CA Osasuna and all the fans wanting more celebrations, as it was not long which could be arranged due to sanitary restrictions.
It will be the second time that CA Osasuna, as an institution, is the protagonist of the start of the San Fermín festivities. In 2000, on the occasion of the team’s promotion to the First Division, the rojillo captain, César Palacios, was in charge of lighting the fuse for the chupinazo.
Last year, after two years without parties, the chupinazo also had its rojillo touch, with the exporter Juan Carlos Unzué who, to his long career as a footballer and coach, joined the claim of his fight against ALS.
