As reported by the Civil Guard in a press release, the events occurred on Friday, June 2, when five young people, three of them minors, jumped into the waters of the reservoir trying to flee from the agents who were chasing them.
The five young men had fled after trying to rob the San Martín de Pusa tobacconist at 12:00 noon on Friday.
The youngsters fled in a car after attempting the robbery
The Civil Guard learned of the attempted robbery and alerted the patrols in the area that the perpetrators had been at least four young people, who had fled in a blue vehicle.
The vehicle was detected by agents from the Malpica de Tajo post, who began their pursuit, to which patrols from the Hinojosa de San Vicente, El Carpio de Tajo and La Puebla de Montalbán posts were added.
Upon arriving at the Ronda hermitage, in El Carpio de Tajo, the five youths abandoned the vehicle and continued to flee on foot, pursued by the civil guards.
At one point during the chase, the five youths threw themselves into the waters of the reservoir to avoid being captured by the agents.
Four of them were able to swim out with the help of the agents, but the fifth began to sink and eventually drowned in the reservoir.
The civil guards could not rescue him due to the turbidity and depth of the waters
This despite the fact that three of the civil guards dived in to try to help him, but it was not possible due to the depth and turbidity of the water.
After his disappearance in the waters, a search operation was activated in which agents of the Special Group for Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Badajoz Civil Guard Command, firefighters and civil guards participated.
A medical helicopter and an ambulance were also activated.
Finally, the GEAS agents recovered the body of the deceased, which was transferred to the Toledo Legal Medicine Institute for an autopsy.
The alleged perpetrators of the attempted robbery are between 15 and 19 years old
The five alleged perpetrators of the attempted robbery, between the ages of 19 and 15, have numerous police officers and two were in search and re-admission to a juvenile center.
Three of the four who managed to swim out of the reservoir have been made available to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office as alleged perpetrators of an attempted crime of violence and intimidation.
These crimes are also charged to the fourth detainee, who has been handed over to a court of First Instance and Instruction in Torrijos (Toledo).
