Santander (EFE).- A new “Operation Kilo” tries this weekend to fill the warehouses of the Food Bank of Cantabria with food and products, which have “a fairly small stock”, so that they can last at least until the Great November collection.
Just fifteen days ago, the shelves of the Cantabria Food Bank were emptied, which had to draw on savings and make a purchase of more than one hundred thousand euros to meet the most pressing needs of those who need it.
“We had nothing at all,” the organization’s president, Gema Díaz, said in statements to EFE.
This campaign aims to collect donations when consumers shop in supermarkets through two modalities: as always with basic necessities, offered by Hipercor, Mercadona, Día and Alcampo, or with a financial contribution at the checkout, only available at Carrefour and Lupa , which offer both modes.
There are more than 120 establishments collaborating these three days in Cantabria, with almost 200 volunteers signed up, Díaz pointed out.
“You need everything”
“Everything is needed, but above all hygiene products for infants and food such as infant milk, baby food jars or diapers,” he stressed.
Between 8,500 and 10,000 people go to the Food Bank of Cantabria every month.
For this reason, its manager has appealed to all Cantabrians, who “always respond positively”, to lend a hand to try to fill their warehouses.
“It depends on the month, from 8,500 to 10,000 adults, children and infants. It’s a more or less stable thing, what we can’t do is get below these figures”, he explained in the face of this “Operation Kilo”.
From the Food Bank they noticed “a strong peak” of arrivals in September, when the end of the summer contracts for the hotel industry came together, the return to school and the first recalculation of the mortgages, also with profiles of “different” people. to the usual
Not only families are noticing the influence of inflation, said the leader of the Cantabria Food Bank, who can buy less and less due to the rise in prices.
“We are noticing a lot of inflation. It is tremendous, I am not surprised that all the families have difficulties to get there, if we buy basic products and we are spending much more money than ever ”, she lamented.
