Las Palmas De Gran Canaria (EFE).- United for Gran Canaria has announced this Thursday that it will stand for the general elections to be held on July 23.
The Gran Canaria formation explained that the almost 18,000 votes obtained in the elections last Sunday “have encouraged its members to undertake the challenge of attending the next ones”, a decision that its board of directors endorsed this Wednesday.
United for Gran Canaria is considering two scenarios for the general elections: running alone or in conjunction with a formation that shares their idea of what must be claimed for the Canary Islands.
Among these ideas are the income tax bonus for residents of the archipelago and the recognition of the right to a disability pension for those who, without having been able to contribute, due to their age, suffer from some disability, the widow’s pension for women and men who, despite not being married or registered as common-law couples, have a child with the deceased person, and the orphan’s pension for all orphans, regardless of the number of years contributed by their parents.
Apart from the “interest of several parties to come together with them to the electoral appointment, the Gran Canaria formation is maintaining contacts with local formations with a view to forming a great Gran Canaria formation, not only for July 23, but also for the next municipal and regional elections of 2027”.
The formation led by Lucas Bravo de Laguna achieved 28M representation in six municipalities and can form part of the government in five of them, the party underlined in a statement.
“Despite having obtained almost 18,000 votes and a great result in the northern municipalities of Gran Canaria, it has not been possible to enter the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall and the Island Council, which were two of the party’s objectives,” he explains. The party, which considers that “it has been affected by the fact that citizens have voted nationally, which invites the demands of United for Gran Canaria to be extended to this area,” the note added.
For United for Gran Canaria, “a party that defends the interests of Gran Canaria but proud to be Canarian and Spanish”, believes that “the Canary Islands must have voices that defend it in the Congress of Deputies and the Senate and that do not comply with imposed guidelines from the addresses of the parties in Madrid”.
