Astillero (EFE).- The re-elected mayor of Astillero, Javier Fernández Soberón, faces the next four years with an overwhelming majority, having 15 of the 17 councilors of the City Council, but with the uncertainty of the future of his party, Ciudadanos, a success for which he assures that “there are no magic potions”, but “work and closeness” with the neighbors.
“We constitute a municipal group and there is no type of inconvenience there. The future will tell, hopefully the Ciudadanos situation will be reversed, improve and we can face a new challenge but we have to be prudent and in politics everything changes very quickly so we: Astillero, Astillero and Astillero”, assures the only mayor of this party in Cantabria in an interview with EFE.
Fernández Soberón, who has tripled his number of councilors and has become the most voted mayor in all of Spain among the largest municipalities with 18,000 inhabitants, has obtained a result “so broad” that none of the members of his candidacy expected, recognize.
And he points out that the sensations in recent months have been “very good”, the same as throughout the campaign, which for his team has lasted, not only fifteen days, but four years in which they have worked “very ferociously”.
“It is tremendous support for the work of the entire team, we see it above an electoral result as a tremendous show of affection from our neighbors after four years of work that have also been very hard and complicated and with this electoral result it gives us Above all, a lot of energy and affection”, he stressed after being re-elected mayor.
To receive the support of his neighbors and in such a majority way, Fernández Soberón points out that the formula is to be aware of the shipyard residents, both the youngest and the oldest and always try to “do everything possible and a little more ”.
“Too much punishment for Citizens”
In any case, and although he hopes to live up to that trust, he feels “sad” for being the only mayor of Ciudadanos because he would have liked to have had more colleagues with responsibilities like his but, remember, that “it is the neighbors who they put them in and they take them away”.
And, for that reason, it gives more value to its electoral result, after Ciudadanos has almost disappeared from the Cantabrian political scene, losing the three regional deputies it obtained in the previous elections and the majority of municipal representation.
In any case, he alleges that in local politics “people vote more and not so much for acronyms or parties”, although he regrets the setback received by his party. “We do not like what has happened, it is perhaps too great a punishment on the part of the citizenry, but you have to learn from everything and the people are sovereign, so they have made this decision that must be analyzed to work and reverse the complicated situation ”, he points out.
In his case, and despite the results of his party, which has announced that it will not run in the general elections on July 23, Fernández Soberón has “clear duties” for the next four years: “work, work and work”, sums up the re-elected mayor of Astillero as a challenge for the next four years at the helm of this coastal municipality in Santander Bay.
