This count includes all acts of physical or psychological violence – including attacks on sexual freedom, threats, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty – inflicted on a woman by a man who is or has been her partner or ex-partner.
In the Basque Country, 2022 was the second consecutive year in which sexist violence increased. In 2020 the victims were 559, 22% less than the previous year, but since then this type of crime has not stopped growing.
Thus, in 2021, 614 cases were registered, that is, 9.8% more, and in 2022 the figure shot up to 783, a 27.5% increase, according to the Statistics on Domestic Violence and Gender Violence published this Wednesday. by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Despite this, the Basque Country has the lowest rate of victims of all communities with 0.8 cases per 1,000 women over 14 years of age. The average rate stands at 1.5 in the State and the region with the worst data is La Rioja with 2.6.
780 attackers arrested
Most of the victims in the Basque Country suffered violence at the hands of their partners (428), while 351 were committed by ex-partners. In addition, four women who were in the process of separating were victims of sexist violence, a scourge that also affected 73 minors.
As for the men reported and who led to the adoption by the judges of protection orders and other precautionary measures, last year there were 780, 27.8% more, an increase in line with the greater number of victims.
In total, they were charged with 1,032 crimes, more than half injuries (522), although torture and attacks against moral integrity (189), threats (131), coercion (69) and violations of sentences were also frequent. (59). There were also 28 sexual assaults and 6 sexual abuses.
Throughout last year, the courts convicted 1,833 men and handed down 10,434 sentences against them. Of these, 1,047 were imprisonment, 2,166 were prohibited from approaching the victim, 1,958 were prohibited from communicating with her, and 161 were permanently located.

The INE has also reported that in 2022 the victims of domestic violence, that exercised by both men and women against family members, with the exception of the partner or ex-partner, decreased in the Basque Country.
Thus, 309 victims with a protection order or precautionary measures were registered, which represented a drop of 19.7% compared to the previous year, when the cases were 385. By gender, there were 142 Basque men victims of this violence (-12 .3%) and 167 women (-25.1%).
In Spain as a whole, victims of gender violence rose by 8.3% to reach 32,644 women, while 1,376 minors also suffered this scourge.
On the other hand, a total of 33,209 men were denounced last year for gender violence and a protection order or precautionary measures were issued against them, which represents 10.5% more than in 2021.
Regarding domestic violence, last year there were 8,151 victims throughout the State, 1.1% less than in 2021.
