Mérida (EFE).- The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge will agree to the request of the Junta de Extremadura considering that it is “feasible” to assign the concession rights for water use in favor of the autonomous Administration, which will prevent the demolition of the dam.
This was announced this Wednesday by the regional Executive in a press release, in which it has assured that this decision by the Ministry will guarantee the maintenance of the dam and the viability of supplying the towns of Valdecaballeros and Castilblanco, and will establish the way to articulate it.
The Board filed an appeal before the Secretary of State for the Environment of the Ministry to request the suspension of the resolution of the General Directorate of Water, which required the concession holders to demolish the Valdecaballeros dam, and which now are conferred.
This appeal was filed before the resolution, issued on March 7, of the expiration of concession rights for the use of water from the Guadiana River, in the García de Sola reservoir and through its tributary, the Guadalupejo River, destined for to the refrigeration and service needs of the Valdecaballeros nuclear power plant, in the municipalities of Valdecaballeros and Castilblanco (Badajoz) and Alía (Cáceres).
Political parties, agrarian organizations and the residents of the area opposed the demolition of the dam.
