Washington (EFE).- The US published this Tuesday a list with information on the nuclear warheads it possesses and once again urged Russia to return to the START treaty.
In a statement, the government of President Joe Biden explained that it decided to publish the list to demonstrate its transparency and “commitment to responsible nuclear conduct.”
The treaty, signed in 2010, limits the number of long-range nuclear warheads each country can have deployed to 1,550.
The US reproached Russia for not having complied with its obligation to reveal the amount of this type of weapon it has in its possession, since it decided to suspend its participation in the treaty “unjustifiably and unilaterally”.
“USA. calls on the Russian Federation to return to full compliance with the New START Treaty and all stabilizing transparency and verification measures contained therein,” the State Department stressed in the statement.
Putin announced on February 21 the suspension of his country’s compliance with the New START, although he qualified that Russia is not abandoning the pact, but is limiting itself to suspending it because of the US and the hostile attitude of Washington, which it supports with weapons and finance to Ukraine.
The treaty, signed by then US and Russian presidents Barack Obama and Dmitri Medvedev, also restricts the number of launch vehicles and systems that Washington and Moscow can have deployed or in reserve, but its cornerstone is the verification regime that the treaty establishes to ensure that these limits are met.
