Santa Cruz de Tenerife, May 15 (EFE).- The Canary Islands established a new record for passengers by bus and tram last March with a total of 7.6 million, the highest monthly number in the historical series, which dates back to 1996 .
The annual variation rate is 48.3%, the highest in all of Spain, according to the Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), which reveals the impact of free public transport for frequent travelers since its entry into force last January.
In the first month of the year there were 6.3 million travelers compared to 6.2 in February.
Compared with other autonomous communities, the Canary Islands exceed Galicia (5.3 million) and Castilla y León (6.2 million) in terms of the number of public transport users, and are close to the Basque Country (7.9 million).
This list is headed by the Community of Madrid (46.7 million), Catalonia (27.5 million) and Andalusia (20.6 million). EFE
