Beijing (EFE).- A group of seven friends ate 300 crabs, 80 desserts and 50 boxes of durians in one sitting at a free buffet in the Chinese city of Qingdao (east) to recover the entrance price to the restaurant, a banquet that has unleashed numerous criticisms on the social platforms of the Asian country.
The diners, all in their twenties, shared videos of their copious feast on the internet, and justified the huge amounts of food consumed by saying that at that age it is normal to have a large appetite.
In addition to the above, the young people -six men and one woman- also reported “countless” prawns and salmon fillets, the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported today.
The banquet took place on May 3 and lasted until the restaurant’s closing time because the owners did not realize that the group was staying in the establishment for longer than the two hours included in the admission price.
In the videos broadcast on the Bailu platform, one of the young people explained that each one paid 160 yuan (23 dollars, 21 euros) and assured that they did not exceed it, since they “only” ate to satisfy their appetite.
“We digest food quickly. That night, one of my friends said that he was hungry again,” said the author of the video, surnamed Zhang.
Although in China it is common for those who pay to enter a buffet to consume enough food to recover the “investment”, the images have provoked much criticism of the diners, whom some Internet users have accused of being “immoral” and others have criticized for showing the remains of the banquet.
The Chinese government approved a law two years ago to prevent excessive consumption and waste of food due to the high demand for food in the Asian country, which has strained supply chains.
The SCMP also recalls that last April two women were arrested in the province of Zhejiang (east) for having taken food valued at 400 yuan (57 dollars, 52 euros) from a buffet where they had previously had lunch.
