Santiago de Compostela, May 6 (EFE).- Coviran Granada continued its downward spiral in Santiago de Compostela, where this Saturday it chained its seventh consecutive defeat against Monbus Obradoiro (88-83) to further complicate its future in the Endesa league.
Frenchman Leo Westermann, who signed one of his best games with the Obradoirista shirt (18 points, PIR of 24), and Canadian Kassius Robertson led the Galician triumph, against a Granada that didn’t even give up when it was 15 down.
After an even start (5-4, min.4), Obradoiro hit their rival with remarkable effectiveness from the three-point line. Westermann led the attack of the Galician team, which began to set the pace of the duel despite the fact that the American Luke Maye also showed his wrist.
At the start of the second quarter, after another treble by Álex Suárez, the Galician lead reached eight points. Granada was not comfortable (28-18), but from their defense they began to raise doubts in their rival, whom they scared with a 0-6 run. Moncho Fernández stopped the game (28-24, min.15), and his team reacted with a three-pointer from Robertson, on the buzzer, and a counterattack from Thomas Scrubb.
Pablo Pin tried to stop the Galician reaction, but Leo Westermann’s return to the track had already given Obradoiro’s attack a different air, which put their victory on track at the start of the second half (55-40, min.24).
True to their style, Granada did not give in, and a couple of obradoirista oversights, accompanied by greater defensive aggressiveness from the visitors, allowed them to dream of a comeback by falling below the ten-point barrier after a new three-pointer from Renfroe ( 57-50). Moncho Fernández called a timeout, but the Andalusians, much more intense, had returned (69-60, min.30).
Not even three free throws scored by Philip Scrubb intimidated Granada, which got within six (72-66) but it could have been three if Pere Tomás hit the third consecutive triple in just one minute. He failed and paid for it. Obradoiro stretched with a 4-0 run, and Pablo Pin stopped the match (76-66, min.34).
Granada grabbed Senegalese Youssou Ndoye, unstoppable in the paint, to stay alive. He entered the last three minutes with the score tight (80-74), but Ndoye’s disqualification and two consecutive three-pointers from Robertson ended up knocking him down. EFE
