Barcelona (EFE).- The American actress and activist Susan Sarandon points out that there is a very high probability that Donald Trump will be elected president of the United States again and attributes it to the fact that “the Democrats have been losing the working class for years.”
“The Democrats are not being very smart and, meanwhile, Trump has become a model,” said the 77-year-old artist in a small meeting with the press in Barcelona.
Sarandon is the guest star of the 7th edition of the BCN Film Fest in that Spanish city.
Susan Sarandon, arrested in 2018 for protesting against Trump
Arrested in 2018 for protesting against the immigration policy of then-President Trump, she warned of the “insanity” of the tycoon once again occupying the Oval Office of the White House. The next presidential elections are in 2024.
The United States, he specified, is misinformed and divided, and with many people without social security and bankrupt due to health problems, to which are added those of arms and security, the environment and some young people who do not identify themselves. Neither with Republicans nor with Democrats, who demand rights that nobody is paying attention to.
The actress, winner of an Oscar for “Dead Man Walking”, warned that in her country “people have stopped believing in the Government, in the news, and while millions in amounts are being sent to Ukraine”.
He opined that it illustrates the situation very well that, “when the environmental disaster happened” of a train that derailed with chemical products last February in Ohio, “Trump was there distributing money and water, and Biden (the current president) was not “.
The Democrats “have been losing the working class for years, they are not facing up to economic problems,” he explains, “they only focus on culture, and with that, I don’t know if they are going to get people to vote for them.”
Mother, activist and actress
On her Twitter profile, Susan Sarandon defines herself as a mother, activist and actress: “It is my order of priorities, since I have been an activist longer than an actress and always a mother”, she specifies.
Regarding her film “Thelma & Louise” (1991), which is being screened at the festival today, Sarandon is delighted that it has become a “feminist symbol for the new generations, although neither Ridley Scott (the director) nor we thought of it. this when doing it”, he commented in reference to the other actress of the film, Geena Davis.
She was able to see this new perspective when she took one of her children to see the Grand Canyon (Arizona), where the film ends, “without knowing that it was the anniversary of the film and there I found a lot of women celebrating,” she recalls.
The American actress also specified that “you have to be careful with what you do because you can end up making a homophobic film or one that justifies violence. It is like when history is explained, it is always told from the point of view of the conquerors”.
Cinema that invites debate and reflection
Susan Sarandon, who never wanted to be an actress, has worked under the orders of great directors such as Billy Wilder, Sidney Lumet, Ridley Scott, Louis Malle, Joel Schumacher, Tim Robbins, Paul Haggis and Robert Benton.

In the cinema, he values films that, like “The Truman Show”, “invite debate, provide information, allow you to identify with someone different from yourself or open you up to a point of view that is something different from your daily experience”.
Despite having worked with directors who were former actors, such as Robert Redford, John Turturro or her ex-partner Tim Robbins, the possibility of directing was not considered: “I wouldn’t have a good time, I don’t like studio interference and I don’t like it.” They matter where the cars are parked, I care about people at the end of the day.”
And she adds: “I make a lot of suggestions, I am full of ideas, and I also like to have fun, but I do it from the back seat, not as the driver of the car, especially at this moment in my life. Now that my children are older, I want to spend time with them, have fun.”
