International Writing, Apr 13 (EFE).- Ukraine has already registered 77,500 war crimes committed by Russian forces on its territory, for which more than 300 people have been charged so far, and will try to prove that it is an “act of genocide,” a source from the Attorney General’s Office reported Thursday.
“We view the crimes committed by the Russian invaders against the Ukrainian people from the perspective of genocide. As of today, we have already registered 77,500 war crimes in Ukraine,” Yuriy Belousov, a senior prosecutor dealing with war crimes, said on television tonight, according to the local agency Ukrinform.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, “these crimes are united by the unbridled desire of the Russian leadership to destroy Ukraine as an independent country, and the Ukrainians, as a separate independent nation.”
And it is from this angle, added Belousov, that they are trying to analyze “these murders committed by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, acts of torture, sexual violence.”
According to the prosecutor, the latest video showing the execution of a possible Ukrainian soldier “is more than just a crime, it is part of the general criminal landscape, a manifestation of the real attitude of Russians towards Ukrainians.”
“They want to physically destroy us. That is why I hope that Ukraine will be able to prove the crime of genocide in national and international courts, ”she insisted.
At the same time, he noted that the attempt to prove the crime of genocide does not rule out bringing to justice the perpetrators of other international crimes, including those against humanity or crimes of aggression.
“Therefore, you must understand that we will not prove only genocide. As of today, we already have more than 300 people accused of war crimes committed in Ukraine.
In addition, we have 647 people who are representatives of the highest positions in Russia. Military political leadership, suspected of a crime of aggression,” said the special prosecutor.
According to data cited by the local agency, from the day of the Russian invasion, on February 24 of last year, and until February 15, 2023, a total of 8,006 civilians, including 487 children, died in Ukraine and 13,287 civilians were injured, including 954 children.
However, he added that the actual number of civilian casualties “is much higher” as many reports of alleged civilian deaths or injuries in certain cities and regions have yet to be verified.
Ukrainian border guards have been able to identify more than 10,000 people complicit in Russian war crimes, using the American Clearview AI facial recognition tool, according to Ukrinform.
