Madrid (EFE).- Thousands of people from Madrid have accompanied the steps of more than a dozen Good Friday processions this afternoon, some of the most prominent in the capital, to which the saetas have provided a soundtrack.
Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli, one of the most revered by the people of Madrid, has left on the shoulders of 180 bearers after the mayor of the city, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has given the order for the first ‘raised’ of the pass at 7:11 p.m.
During the tour, the procession of Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli experiences one of its peak moments each year at the stop at the Iglesia de las Calatravas, the place where the meeting of the Lord of Madrid and the Virgen de la Soledad takes place and where this Good Friday a saeta interpreted by the young Madrid cantaor José del Curro has been heard.
A while before and from a balcony of the Lhardy restaurant, the singer from Málaga Diana Navarro, dressed in a black mantilla, has dedicated another saeta to the pace.
other processions
Good Friday is the day with the most activity of processions in Madrid. In fact, at exactly the same time as that of Jesús de Medinaceli, the procession of the Santísimo Cristo de la Fe, popularly known as Cristo de los Alabarderos, which although it is one of the most modern in the capital (its departure was resumed in 2003) actually has its origin in the 17th century.
The order for the raising of the Cristo de los Alabarderos -the only military procession in Madrid- came from King Felipe VI’s cousin Simoneta Gómez Acebo, daughter of Pilar de Borbón, who usually came to venerate the image.
Along with these processions, two of the most popular, have also taken to the streets this Good Friday, among others, the Seven Sorrows, from the church of Santa Cruz (the only procession that passes through the narrow street of El Codo), the Divine Captive, from the church of San Sebastián, the Cristo de la Misericordia and Santísima Virgen de la Soledad, from the church of San Andrés Apóstol (Villaverde), the Holy Burial, from the church of the Holy Cross, or the Procession of Silence, from the parish of San Sebastián Mártir (Carabanchel).
