Seville, (EFE).- Holy Week in Seville this year will have a celebration that has not taken place for two decades, the Santo Entierro Grande, a great procession that takes place on Holy Saturday on the occasion of the 775th anniversary of of the return of the Christian cult to the capital by King San Fernando.
This procession, whose last edition was held in 2004, for the IV centuries of the Decree of Cardinal Fray Niño de Guevara, in which the brotherhoods of Seville were urged to make the Cathedral a penance station, consists of the parade of more than one dozen steps that have already been processed during the week in what is the construction of a “story” about the passion of Christ.
The brotherhood of the Holy Burial of Seville has been in charge of organizing this procession since 1850, when the first edition was held after the initiative of the Dukes of Montpensier, who sought to revitalize a Holy Week like that of the capital of Andalusia, which was in low hours.
This year there will be fifteen steps that participate in the procession, and that represent the passages of the Prayer in the Garden (Montesión brotherhood), the Betrayal (Kiss of Judas brotherhood), Jesus before Caifás (San Gonzalo), Jesus whips (Las Cigarreras), la Burla (El Valle) and la Sentencia (La Macarena).
A fortnight of steps in the Holy Burial
The passages of Jesus Takes the Cross (La Paz), Camino del Calvario (Passion), Calle de la Amargura (La Amargura), the Third Fall (Esperanza de Triana), Jesus and the crucifixion (La Exaltación), are also represented. the Conversion of the Good Thief (Montserrat), The Expiration (El Cachorro), death (El Calvario) and the Descent (La Quinta Angustia).
These fifteen pasos will be accompanied by the three that make up the procession of the Holy Burial, that of the Triumph of the Holy Cross, known as ‘La Canina’, which will open the procession, and that of the Reclining Christ and the Mourning, which closes it.
Each of the fifteen processions will go to the Plaza de la Campana, where the official race of Seville begins and where the common route will begin, until the exit of the Cathedral, where they will return independently to each of the temples where they reside .
There will be a total of 36 Nazarenes who accompany each of the participating steps: 24 with candles (12 couples), five with banners and four rods, five in the presidency and the prosecutor of the step.
Hotel occupancy in the Seville capital will be close to 90%, according to the employers’ association, motivated by the extraordinary nature of this procession -held ten times- and the absence of processions on Holy Saturday in other Andalusian provincial capitals, such as Malaga or Huelva. EFE
