Police Scotland have not released the identity of the detainee, but say a 58-year-old man was arrested this morning in Scotland and is being held at a police station, where he is being questioned by detectives.
The agents also search several homes as part of the investigation into the finances of the party in power of the Scottish autonomous government, added the Police, who have specified that they cannot comment because it is an ongoing investigation.
PNS reaction
After learning of the arrest, the SNP issued a statement saying that “it would not be appropriate” to comment on an ongoing police investigation, but pointed out that the party “fully cooperates with this investigation and will continue to do so.”
The formation added that the governing body of the SNP agreed at the weekend to a review of “governance and transparency, which will take place in the coming weeks.”
Without specifying the reasons, Sturgeon submitted his resignation as chief minister and leader of the SNP last February, which gave way to an internal election, which gave victory to the continuation candidate, Humza Yousaf.
Last month, Murrell tendered his resignation as chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), following speculation that he could submit to a vote of no confidence by members of the SNP Executive.
Murrell’s resignation was effective immediately and came amid discontent in the ranks of the party over the drop in the number of members of the nationalist party and alleged irregularities in the party’s finances.
In May 2021, the then SNP National Treasurer, Douglas Chapman, resigned after less than a year in office on the grounds that he had “not received the necessary financial information” to carry out his duties.
