Santander, April 3 (EFE) fishing boat and that “the boat was no longer visible”, only some gear and buoys.
These two fishing boats were able to rescue, with the help of Maritime Rescue who later went to the scene, seven crew members of the boat -one of them serious- and the two fishermen who had died. Another remains still missing.
Antonio Fernández Sanjosé, patron of Siempre Nécora, based in the Cantabrian town of Colindres; Lamine Faye, fisherman on that boat; and Miguel Ángel Rosales, a crew member of the Ave Fénix, the other Santander fishing boat that came to the scene, have told journalists how the rescue of his companions has been.
The three fishermen have addressed the media in the fishing port of Santander, where this Monday there is sadness over the death of two of the ten crew members of the Vilaboa Uno, and concern over the disappearance of another fisherman, who is being sought in the place of the sinking, six miles from Cabo Mayor.
The skipper of the Siempre Nécora has explained that around two in the morning they received notice from the ship based in Santander that they were sinking.
In the half hour it took them to reach the area, they only saw gear, two buoys and a balloon beacon from the fishing boat’s skipper, which is about 32 meters long. “You couldn’t see the ship at all,” he insisted.
He has assured, however, that he was not concerned about the ship but its crew, seven of whom were rescued by this fishing boat, one of them already deceased, although they tried to revive him.
Among these seven rescued was the skipper of Vilaboa Uno, but Fernández Sanjosé has indicated that they did not speak, they were all “in shock” and they were only treated to avoid hypothermia.
This pattern does not understand what could have happened, nor does it know if, as some sources point out, it could have been a leak in the hull, but it has assured that the sea was “dead calm” and there was almost no wind or waves.
The Ave Fénix, based in the port of Santander like the wrecked fishing boat, was the second ship to go to the place notified at around 3:30 a.m. and when it arrived, all it did was rescue two other crew members, one of them one of his crew members, Miguel Ángel Rosales, explained that he was “a bit serious” and the other “fine”, who could not hold back the tears.
“Yes, of course, they are from here, from the pier,” Rosales explained to journalists who asked him if he knew the deceased fishermen, one of whom was from Santander and lived in the fishing district and, according to sources in that area , was “well known” and was going to retire soon.
Lamine Faye, fisherman of Siempre Nécora, has insisted that all the crew members of Vilaboa Uno who were in the water wore a life jacket, but “nothing could be seen from the boat, just a bit of art (rigging)”. “They were in shock, all very bad,” said this crew member of Senegalese origin.
In statements to EFE, the second skipper of Siempre Nécora, José Ramón Fernández, explained that the rescued had “fear in their bodies” and they have been provided “blankets, clothes, coffee and some have sat near the motor of the boat to warm up, or in the kitchen”.
“We did not want to ask them anything. They had enough with the scare they have been through ”, she pointed out and explained that the event caught them while they were sailing to San Vicente de la Barquera to fish for mackerel.
