Oviedo (EFE).- Asturias adds 95 forest fires this Saturday, one less than late yesterday afternoon, fires that will mostly be reviewed throughout this morning to determine their status.
According to the latest information provided by the Principality’s Emergency Service, during last night and throughout this morning the extinction forces remain working in the sources of Is, in the council of Allande; in La Plata, in Castrillón; in Aballe, in Parres; in Balmori, in Llanes; in Bustefollado, in Villayón; and in Caborno, Merás, Riospinoso and Aldín, in Valdés.
For their part, the members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) sent to Oviedo yesterday to help put out the fire on Mount Naranco have been demobilized after the focus was deactivated.
At this time, the AS-351 highways, between Almuñas and Merás, remain closed to traffic; the AS-366, between Brieves and Merás; and the CO-4, between Covadonga and Los Lagos.
Evacuation of 375 people
The virulence of the fire, which has especially compromised the west of the community and has forced the evacuation of 375 people, has led the Government of the Principality to declare it a catastrophic area.
The extinction work to try to stop the worst wave of fires in the Principality since 2017 was hampered yesterday by the lack of rainfall and strong gusts of wind.
The State Meteorological Agency forecasts for today light rains throughout the territory, which will intensify during the second half of the day, with more probability in the eastern half, and a drop in temperatures.
The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has committed “the collaboration and support” of the Government of Spain to the people affected by the wave of fires in Asturias, whose investigations “are underway” and, if it is determined that they have been provoked, “those responsible are going to answer in court.”
The minister visited yesterday the advanced command post installed in the town of Navelgas, in the council of Tineo, located in western Asturias, the area hardest hit by the fires.
