Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- The Central Electoral Board (JEC) has agreed to maintain the electoral rights of Nueva Canarias after the cancellation of its registration in the Registry of Parties, still pending resolution in a judicial process, on the understanding that the new formation registered by its members, Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, maintains the same identity.
“Consequently, in the next electoral processes, the results obtained by Nueva Canarias must be assigned to Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista for the purposes of the right to obtain free space in the public media and to be considered in electoral information, debates and electoral interviews”, says the agreement.
This will also be the case with respect to obtaining spaces and places to carry out electoral campaign acts; to the perception of electoral subsidy advances that correspond to the results obtained in the last elections, “as well as to any other electoral right that could correspond to the Nueva Canarias formation”.
Thus, the JEC considers Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista as a political formation “successor to the electoral rights of Nueva Canarias, provided that during the next electoral processes no new circumstances arise that call into question that identity of political formations.”
Nueva Canarias formally ceased to exist for more than a year, specifically between July 2021 and November 2022, because the Central Court for Administrative Litigation number 5 of the National Court ordered its removal from the Register of Political Parties for not having updated in term their statutes.
In that sentence, the Court maintained that the failure to update its statutes showed that it was a party “inactive”, despite the fact that on those dates NC was not only present in the Congress of Deputies, but was also part of the Government of the Canary Islands, directed the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and was represented in multiple institutions on the islands.
In November 2022, another judge revoked that sentence after acknowledging that the procedure was not notified to NC and its removal from the Register of Political Parties was carried out in a way that violated the rights of its leaders and militants.
In the interval between these two rulings, NC registered again in the Register of Parties as Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, requesting to be the successor for all purposes of the original formation in the event that its registration continued to be cancelled. EFE
