Madrid (EFE).- A dozen activists staged a surprise action this afternoon in front of the Lions of Congress façade, throwing cans of red paint to protest the Government’s climate policy, although they have been immediately detained by the Police.
When the plenary session of Congress voted to validate the pension reform decree, a group of between 8 and 9 people from the collectives “Extinction rebellion”, “Colectivos Futuro Vegetal, and “Rebelión Científica” began to shout “climate justice”. and throw cans of biodegradable red paint against the facade of Congress.
During the action, which lasted a few minutes, the protesters have launched proclamations such as “criminals rule us” and have lamented the effects that climate change is producing.
The activists have defended this action and anticipate new protests as long as the Government does not take action, understanding that they have no “alternative” left when there are all kinds of scientific articles warning of the climate crisis and “they do nothing.”
In fact, a year ago, the same groups of activists staged another similar surprise action.
On April 6, a group of scientists and activists stained the facade of the Congress of Deputies with fake blood -a preparation of water and beets- to demand climate action from political leaders.
Six of the fifteen climate activists from Rebelión Científica who threw beetroot juice at the Congress of Deputies in April 2022 testified in the Madrid courts this Thursday, beginning a judicial process that some have described as “criminalization of the protest.”
“We are fed up with nothing being done, a year has passed since the action in the same place throwing away biodegradable paint that washes away with water and our government has done nothing. Another IPCC report was published, and our government continues not to act and not only not to act, it acts to criminalize us, to repress us. We are fed up, we don’t know what else to do”, said one of the spokespersons for these activists.
