Kiev (EFE).- The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is visiting the Ukrainian nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia, in territory occupied by Russia, as confirmed to Efe by the IAEA press officer, Fredrik Dahl.
Rafael Grossi has been in Ukraine with an IAEA delegation since the beginning of this week to address the security situation at the plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, where only one high-voltage line works for the electricity supply needed by the facility. .
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared today that he has no plans to maintain direct contacts with Grossi, with whom the representatives of the Russian nuclear energy company Rosatom, in charge of the plant since the Russian occupation of the zone.
The plant as a weapon of war
During his trip to Ukraine this week, Grossi visited with the country’s president, Volodimir Zelensky, a hydroelectric power station on the Dnipro River that he described as an “essential part of the system that supports the nuclear safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant.”
“Zelenski showed me the recent damage that the dam has suffered,” said Grossi, who since the beginning of the Russian invasion has repeatedly traveled to the area to seek compromises between the parties to guarantee nuclear safety at the plant.
Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of jeopardizing the viability of the Zaporizhia plant.
Moscow has accused Kiev of bombing the area without taking into account the risk of a nuclear accident, while the Ukrainian government claims that Russia uses the facility to hit the enemy army militarily.
