Toledo (EFE).- The Assembly of Members of Almaraz-Trillo Nuclear Power Plants, AIE has agreed to request the renewal of the operating authorization of the Trillo Nuclear Power Plant (Guadalajara) from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITERD). for ten years, until November 2034.
The request will be sent in accordance with the authorization in force before March 31 and is based on the current circumstances.
The assembly of partners has argued that in the current context, nuclear power plants are a fundamental basic technology that offer stability to the system, guarantee supply and are necessary for the energy transition.
For all these reasons, based on the protocol signed by ENRESA and the owner companies in 2019, the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) and the expectation that it will be able to recover the required investments with a “reasonable return”, the owners of the plant have requested the renewal of the operating authorization of the Trillo Nuclear Power Plant until November 2034.
This period complies with the nuclear calendar provided by the Government and in which this plant is expected to close definitively in 2035.
Studies reveal the good condition of the plant
The studies that accompany this request and, specifically, the Integrated Aging Management Plan (PIEGE) and the Periodic Safety Review (RPS) carried out, show the good condition of the plant, from the point of view of safety , to face this new period of exploitation, the owners have assured.
The RPS includes the strengths identified in the plant and its processes, and both this periodic review and the integrated aging management plan include plans that reinforce compliance with current safety standards and best practices and maintains the plant in an “optimal state for its safe operation”.
These sources have reported that the corresponding resolution from the Ministry for Ecological Transition is expected to be available before November 17, 2024, the expiration date of the current Plant Exploitation Authorization.
During this period, the Nuclear Safety Council will evaluate the documentation of the renewal request and prepare a technical opinion that will be sent to said ministry.
