Pamplona (EFE).- The Anaitasuna pavilion in Pamplona will host the Spanish Master Weightlifting Championship on April 1 and 2, which will bring together the 230 best veteran athletes in the country in a weekend full of passion for this sport.
Arriving from 15 autonomous communities, 230 veteran weightlifters (155 men and 75 women) from 35 to 76 years old, among which are some of the best national lifters of those ages who will seek to win the title.
The court where Helvetia Anaitasuna and Osasuna Magna usually play will become a gigantic stage through which all the participants, coaches, physios and judges will pass. The club’s weightlifting section has been in charge of the preparations.
The president of the entity, Mertxe López; the three-time European champion Mikel Muniáin and Iñaki Domínguez, to whose credit is a victory in the European Championship and a fourth and third place in two World Championships.
Outstanding athletes such as Joaquín Valle (Olympic diploma), Fernando Gracia (international), Santiago Martínez (Olympic), Nekane Martínez (international), Dámaris Sosa (international) or Manuel García (international) will participate in the championship.
Navarra will provide 15 participants
Navarra will contribute 15 participants to the entry list, a list that has already established itself as the largest to date of these tournaments. In addition, it is a test that is qualifying for the World Masters to be held this year in Poland.
“If everything goes well, we intend for it to mean that the door opens and that we can also organize a European Championship”, Muniáin commented during his speech, in which he showed the “privilege” that organizing a event of this magnitude.
His teammate Domínguez has focused on explaining how the test works: “we must be at 100% to be able to reach our best marks and have options to get on the podium”.
In this sense, he has remarked that, although everything is played in a few seconds, behind those precise movements there are hours and hours of work.
“As a weightlifter, you have perfected the technique during many training sessions and you have had to undertake a great process of physical conditioning, which serves as the foundation to be able to lift so many kilos safely. Anyone who dares to go to the championship should know that, in order to be able to lift those weights, there has been a huge process of continuous improvement and constant training beforehand”, he concluded.
