Madrid (EFE).- The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has celebrated the fact that there is “a Canarian Minister of Tourism”, in reference to the new head of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, the socialist from Tenerife Héctor Gómez.
The also general secretary of the PSOE in the Canary Islands has attended this Tuesday the transfer of portfolios and inauguration of Gómez, as he also attended that of the previous head of Health, Carolina Darías, also from the Canary Islands.
Torres has pointed out that “it is very important for the Canary Islands to maintain a minister in the Government, regardless of the color of the central executive, and also in an area as fundamental for the islands as tourism, because we are talking about tourism, more than industry, when we talk about this ministry.”
The Canarian president explained that tourism is a strategic area for the Canary Islands, because it represents more than 35% of its GDP: “it is a joy that someone who has also been the head of Turespaña manages this matter.”
“At the moment, it has European funds on the table and the challenge of executing the projects within the deadlines set by the EU, and it also has sustainability plans with very important projects in the Canary Islands in this area,” he pointed out.
Torres has also pointed out two challenges for Gómez: progress in the commitment of the Canary Islands to develop its commitment to sustainable energy; and, on the other hand, to guarantee connectivity in peripheral areas, such as the islands. EFE
