“We can confirm 23 dead, dozens injured, 4 missing from the tornadoes last night. We have numerous state and local search and rescue teams continuing to work this morning,” the agency reported on its Twitter account today.
Search and rescue operations are working in Sharkey and Humphreys counties (in the western part of the state), the agency noted.
For his part, the state governor, Tate Reeves, said on Twitter that the loss after this meteorological event “will be felt in these towns forever.”
“Pray for the hand of God to be on all those who lost family and friends,” he added.
The center of the destruction appeared to be less than 100 kilometers away in the town of Rolling Fork in Sharkey County.
“Much of the city has been destroyed,” including all the businesses on a commercial and retail stretch of a local highway, former city mayor Fred Miller told Fox.
Some 100,000 homes in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee were still without power as of early Saturday, according to Power Outage.
