Santiago de Compostela, Mar 25 (EFE).- Moncho Fernández celebrates this Saturday, in the derby against Rio Breogán, 400 games as head coach in the Endesa League, a milestone that only six other active coaches can boast of: Aíto García Reneses, Pedro Martínez, Luis Casimiro, Txus Vidorreta, Sito Alonso and Jaume Ponsarnau.
The man from Santiago also holds the record for longevity on the same bench in the history of the ACB, since he has directed twelve seasons at Obradoiro in the highest category -the first was in LEB Oro-.
After playing his first matches in the ACB as an assistant coach, Moncho Fernández’s debut as head coach took place in the 2009-10 season with CB Murcia.
However, that first experience in the elite barely lasted 11 games. One season later, in 2010/11, he took over the Obradoiro bench, which was then a member of LEB Oro.
There began a brilliant career at the club from his hometown, with which he returned to the Endesa League just one year later and which he would later qualify for in his first playoff for the title in the 2012/2013 campaign.
