Panama City, Mar 18 (EFE).- The President of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, thanked this Saturday the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for the “key” support to develop social programs that “improve the living conditions” of the “most vulnerable” population.
“The support of the Inter-American Development Bank has been key to the execution of inclusion and development programs created with the purpose of expanding opportunities that allow the population, especially the most vulnerable Panamanians, to improve their living conditions,” Cortizo said. during the inauguration of the 63rd edition of the annual meeting of the Board of Governors, which is being held in Panama City.
Support in Panama
The president of Panama explained that, through these programs financed by the Bank, health, nutrition, food production, early childhood care and water sanitation services, among others, have been “improved”.
“Financing is important to support the most vulnerable populations, preventing more Panamanians from being left behind as a result of the effects of the covid-19 pandemic,” he added.
The relationship between Panama and this entity began in 1959, and “since then it has contributed (to give) technical assistance and financial support, which have facilitated the implementation of strategies, plans and actions for the advancement” of the country, Cortizo emphasized.
The 63rd edition of the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the IDB is being held in Panama City this weekend with the participation of several ministers of finance, economy and other senior officials from the 48 member countries.
IDB Assembly
Although the Assembly was not inaugurated until today, last Thursday the annual meeting of the development bank began with two days of seminars in which issues such as the climate crisis, poverty or sustainable development were discussed.
During the inauguration, the president of the IDB, Ilan Goldfajn, pointed out that the organization can “do much more” for the development of Latin America, with a new plan focused on three pillars: social issues, climate and regional integration.
The Assembly will conclude on Sunday, the day in which the latest report on the prospects for the region prepared by the entity will be presented.
The Board of Governors of the IDB is the highest decision-making body of the Group and is made up of the ministers of finance and economy and other senior officials of the member countries.
