Sports writing, Mar 19 (EFE).- The Spanish Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who had crossed the finish line in third position, lost it in favor of the Englishman George Russell (Mercedes), having been penalized ten seconds “for having served illegally” another previous penalty -at his pit stop-; in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which was won by the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) ahead of his teammate, the Dutchman Max Verstappen, leader of the championship.
The Asturian double world champion had been penalized with five seconds, due to an irregular position on the grid -in which his car was poorly squared, more than was due to the left side-, a sanction that served during his stop; in which one of his mechanics touched his car before that time frame, for which he received a second penalty, this time for ten seconds.
Those ten seconds that were added to his time meant that the man from Oviedo had to exchange places with Russell, third in a race in which Alonso finally qualified fourth.
Alonso: I don’t care, but the FIA has not turned out well; they had an hour
“I don’t care that they took third place from me; the same if they had taken it from me before getting on the podium it would have hurt me. But the podium is there, we are in all the images, the team and the sponsors. But it is curious that throughout 35 laps they have not noticed. The FIA has not been well, because they have had an hour to give the penalty ”, Alonso explained this Sunday, in Jeddah, to the Dazn television channel.
“Despite all this I am happy, it seems as if I still had not fully assimilated that they took third place from me. We had a great race, which was the goal this weekend. We were the second fastest car; we had a great start and we were leading the race for a few laps. That is there”, explained the brilliant Asturian pilot after signing another sensational performance, little rewarded this time, which keeps him in third place in the World Championship.
“First I had a five second penalty, so I pushed to open up a hole. If they tell me that they give us another ten-second penalty, I would have shot again; and we would have put them back; because we had even more”, commented Fernando, who for a few minutes celebrated his 100th podium -he was at the ceremony together with the Mexican Sergio Pérez, winner this Sunday, and the Dutchman Max Verstappen, the two Red Bull drivers- before he returned 99 to your ‘drawers’ box.
