Brussels (EFE).- The president of the Parliamentary Control Commission of the European Parliament, Monika Hohlmeier, warned the European Commission of the “worrying news” in relation to the so-called “Mediator case” in Spain and urged the institution to analyze whether there are European funds involved, especially from the European recovery plan.
In a letter to which EFE has had access, dated March 8 and addressed to the economic vice president of the Community Executive, Valdis Dombrovskis, and the Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, Hohlmeier, who led the mission of the European Parliament to evaluate the execution of the Spanish recovery plan, also asks Brussels how it intends to “monitor” the matter.
After pointing out that the visit to Spain was “very successful”, the German MEP from the European People’s Party (EPP) adds that she has learned of “the worrying news in the Spanish media about the implementation of some projects in the Canary Islands in which they could potentially EU funds and more specifically RRF funds are in question”, referring to the main program of the European recovery fund.
Hohlmeier shares with Dombrovskis and Gentiloni several press articles related to the “Meditor case” and then asks the European Commission to inform him of “to what extent” community funds are involved in general and the post-covid plan in particular, as well as to report “how you intend to follow up” on the case.
“We would also like to invite the Commission to report on this issue to the Committee on Budgetary Control (of the European Parliament) in due time”, underlines the German MEP.
Hohlmeier led the routine mission of MEPs who, between February 20 and 22, met with government representatives, representatives of regional governments, social agents and personalities from the private sector to analyze the implementation of the Spanish recovery plan.
This group of MEPs then ruled out “possible fraud-type offenses” in the execution of said reform and investment strategy, but asked the Spanish authorities to guarantee the accessibility and clarity of information on the destination of European funds. EFE
