Huelva, (EFE).- The World Biological Corridor, an international project that unites scientists in defense of nature, has declared the Doñana and Almonte Natural Area (Huelva) “Kilometer Zero of Biodiversity in Europe”, due to the importance of the diversity of existing flora and fauna.
Almonte is home to 55% of the surface of the Doñana National Park and has been part of the international project of the World Biological Corridor since July 2022.
In a first line of work, they have reported from the project, several visits by the International Committee of the World Biological Corridor have been made to this Biosphere Reserve that has, among others, recognitions of international prestige as a Wet Zone of International Importance (Ramsar ); Unesco World Heritage; it is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000; European Diploma; and a member of the IUCN Green List.
Variety of ecosystems
Meetings have also been held between the Mayor Rocío del Mar Castellano Domínguez, with the Councilor for the Environment, José María García González and the President of the World Biological Corridor, Jorge Extramiana Salillas.
In a second line of actions, various visits have been made to Doñana to see its biodiversity, verifying the ecological value of this unique space, the variety of ecosystems that come together in a single territory, such as virgin beaches, unique wetlands, dune landscapes, reserves and forest masses of pinyon pines and juniper groves that are home to innumerable emblematic species of Iberian flora and fauna, some in danger of extinction, and all of them of incalculable ecological value.
The International Committee of the World Biological Corridor has verified that this space meets the criteria to be declared a world zero kilometer for many of the species of fauna and flora that overwhelmingly in number and diversity inhabit this territory.
Commitment of the institutions
Likewise, the Committee appreciates the commitment of the city council to this project and its ease in allowing us to work in coordination with them.
The World Biological Corridor project aims to create a space for meetings, synergies, alliances, ideas and projects that, from different parts of the planet, can develop and add significant advances in the expansion of the World Biological Corridor.
This declaration has been possible thanks to the personalities and institutions that work and collaborate in the World Biological Corridor. EFE
