Madrid (EFE).- Although the difference is small, less than seven percentage points, it is in the communities in the south of the peninsula, with Andalusia and Murcia at the forefront, where women concentrate a greater proportion of the burden of household chores, for above 79%, compared to the Canary Islands and the north, especially Navarra, around 72%.
The Survey of Essential Characteristics of the Population and Housing recently published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) with data from 2021 reveals that three out of four people who are in charge of most of the domestic tasks are women and only one is men. , specifically 76.5% for only 23.5%.
According to this INE analysis, 30.8% of Spaniards aged 16 or over, more than 12.2 million, are in charge of “most of the domestic chores” in their homes, while 10.7%, more than 4.2 million do not “usually” participate in this work.

Among the former, those who carry the burden of household chores, 76.5% are women and only 23.5% are men, while among the latter, those who do not usually lend a hand at home, 71 3% are men and only 28.7% are women.
By autonomous community, the proportion of women among those who carry out most of the domestic tasks exceeds 79% in Andalusia and Murcia, is close to that figure in Melilla, is above 77% in Castilla-La Mancha and Ceuta and is close to that percentage in the Balearic Islands, Extremadura and Madrid.
Around the average of 76.5% are in Galicia, the Valencian Community, Asturias and Aragon, more than 75% register Castilla y León, the Basque Country and Cantabria, more than 74% in La Rioja and Catalonia and less than 73% in Navarra and the Canary Islands, the least with 72.3%.
On the contrary, the proportion of men among those who do not regularly participate in domestic chores -in which the north-south difference observed when addressing the greater female weight in household work is broken- reaches its maximum in La Rioja , with 77.2%, and exceeds 75% in Extremadura, Castilla y León, Ceuta, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
Where fewer men evade domestic chores, even with high percentages, is in the Basque Country (64.9%), Madrid (66.5%), Catalonia (67.1%), the Canary Islands (67.5%) and Galicia ( 69.2%).

By municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, El Ejido, with 30.90%, is the one that registers the highest rate of men who do not participate in household chores, followed by Ceuta, Marbella, Melilla, Linares, Utrera and Almería , while the Tenerife town of Granadilla de Abona is the one that boasts the lowest figure: only 9.24% of its men evade this responsibility.
Seen on the contrary, Melilla and Ceuta are the cities where a higher proportion of women do not habitually take part in housework: 8.86 and 8.26%.
Of the total number of women aged 16 and over, 45.9% are in charge of most of the domestic chores at home, 35% deal with most of it by sharing the work with another person or persons, 13, 2% assume a small part and 6% do not participate regularly.
These figures are radically different from those of men, of whom 35.7% are in charge of a small part of these household chores, 33.7 assume the majority together with another person or persons, 15.7% they do not intervene regularly and only 14.9% are responsible for most of the housework.
