This was highlighted by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who has visited the progress of the work on the new building, which began 18 months ago and has not interrupted the operation of the hospital at any time.
Ayuso stressed that it is “one of the two largest civil works in all of Spain, along with the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, and that the “great challenge” has been not to stop its activity despite the work.
The project, in which the Community of Madrid is going to invest more than 85 million euros between 2023 and 2024, is in the second phase with the equipment and furnishing, demolition of the current General Residence -in operation since 1973 -, the modernization of other spaces that remain and redevelopment of the plot with green areas.
This investment is added to the 226 million euros linked to European funds, earmarked for the construction and first endowment of this building.
The new Madrid public health building is being built on a 133,000 square meter plot and will have 10 floors, with the first four in which operating rooms, day hospitals, intensive care, intervention and resuscitation units will be located.
There will also be areas for the diagnosis of diseases, all with state-of-the-art technological equipment.
The hospitalization will be located on the remaining upper floors, distributed in four blocks, with more than 700 rooms for double or individual use depending on the needs.
In addition, it will have a block dedicated exclusively to the care of women and children, including pediatric and obstetric-gynecological emergencies, and it will have versatile spaces that will facilitate health responses to crisis situations, such as emergencies or catastrophes.
The works of the new hospitalization building on October 12 began in August 2021, with the first earthworks, in February 2022 the foundation phase was completed, in July of that same year the basement structure was completed (the first 4 floors plus the basement), and in October the entire structure of the building was completed.
A week ago, the 15 connecting walkways to the Outpatient Activities Center were placed, 15 meters long and covered with glass.
The façade is 69% complete and with a completion date for before the summer, including windows, curtain walls and horizontal sectorization barriers to prevent the spread of fires. In parallel, the multiple carpentry, partition, tiling, flooring, lighting and installation of elevators, bathrooms and wiring, among other actions, continue.
