Santoña (EFE).- The bocarte (anchovy) has begun to appear in the markets of Cantabria, on the first day of the coast of this species that fishermen await with optimism.
The costera del bocarte (anchovy) has begun this cold Wednesday morning with the first auctions in the port of Santoña at an initial price of 8.05 euros/kilo, although it has been “little” fish and of “normal” size for these first blows of the campaign.
The Galician purse seine Playa de Covas has been commissioned to launch, around ten in the morning, the anchovy season in the region with the first 121 boxes of fish – about 1,000 kilos – caught in the Santoña cove.
Good price the first day
Its skipper, José Antonio Muñiz, has expressed his satisfaction when asked by journalists about the “good price” for sale of the genre, although he has stated that there are still “little fish”.
In fact, most of the purse seine fleet has been looking for the anchovy since dawn, which at the moment is elusive or mixed with a closed sardine, despite the fact that its presence had been detected in the sea in recent days.
“Let’s see if the weather and the temperature of the water change and the fish rise,” Muñiz confided, who acknowledges that “they wanted to start” the coastal one because they had been “stopped for a long time.”
“Normal” size for the start of the coastal
His ship has brought a 52-grain-sized anchovy to port, which, in his opinion, for these dates is “normal” while waiting for the genuine size of the coast to emerge, so everything caught will go for consumption. to fresh.
The second ship to bring anchovies to the fishing village of Santoña was the Nuevo Terreño de Colindres, with another batch of 900 kilos that was sold at a price of 8.75 euros/kilo.
The opening of the anchovy fishing ground has allowed practically all of the Cantabrian purse seiners to start fishing activity that was diminished by the prohibition, by Europe, of direct fishing for mackerel (mackerel) and the ban on sardines .
