Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- The number of unemployed registered in the Canary Islands public employment offices grew by 2,726 people in February compared to January, 1.46%, above the average, to stand at total of 189,166 unemployed, according to data published by the Ministry of Labor.
Compared to February of last year, the labor market on the islands currently has 15,968 fewer unemployed, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 7.78%, almost one and a half points better than that observed in Spain as a whole (- 6.45%).
Compared with the rest of Spain, unemployment rose in February on the islands 1.37 points more than the national average, which was 0.09%. Only Murcia and the Community of Madrid presented worse monthly growth rates, 1.72% and 1.63%, respectively.
By provinces, unemployment increased in Las Palmas by 1,746 people compared to January (+1.81%), reaching 97,956 unemployed, but it still accumulates a decrease of 8,269 compared to February 2022 (-7.78%).
For its part, Santa Cruz de Tenerife ended February with 91,210 registered unemployed, 980 more than in January (+1.09%), but 7,699 less than a year ago (-7.78%).
Of the total number of unemployed on the islands, 81,216 are men and 107,950 are women, and 12,887 are under 25 years of age (6,735 men and 6,152 women).
By sectors of activity, unemployment increased last month by 1,107 people in services (heading includes commerce and tourism), by 26 people in industry and by 1,725 in the group of unemployed without previous work. Instead, it decreased by 117 people in the field and by 15 in construction.
The 189,166 unemployed registered in the Canary Islands employment offices are distributed by sectors as follows: 4,103 in agriculture and livestock, 7,090 in industry, 16,914 in construction, 144,361 in services and 16,698 in the group without previous employment.
Last month, 46,703 employment contracts were signed on the islands, 7,264 less than in January (-13.46%) and 8,445 less than a year ago (-15.31%). Of these, 22,457 were permanent and 24,246 temporary.
Regarding permanent contracts, in February 2,369 permanent contracts were signed in the Canary Islands less than in January (-9.54%), but 7,472 more than a year ago (+49.86%).
The signing of temporary contracts decreased, on the other hand, by 4,895 compared to January (-16.80%) and by 15,917 compared to February 2022 (-39.63%). EFE
